the-racehorse.com Stallion Statistics Database presents tabular and graphical information on thousands of stallions.

It is based on a custom database built on source race results, sales results and stallion nomination fees. The source data is imported, validated, standardised and inter-connected so that we can show a stallion's performance over time.

We created new Drupal modules (PHP) for use with MySQL. Commonly-used statistics are re-computed daily to ensure a fast response time when pages are generated.

All the graphs are implemented in standard HTML and require no special software to view. [end of entry]

We were one of ten companies short-listed from hundreds to attend the week-long BBC Innovation Lab for new media ideas.

With the help of mentors and experts, we worked on our idea throughout the week. We pitched at the end of the week of BBC Commissioners. Our idea was one of the few chosen to take forward.

This is from our original labs entry form.

BBC Keywords:

Create and distribute the tools necessary to let anyone add BBC-maintained tags to their online services, as a complement to existing user-generated tags. The BBC has internal taxonomies, and library information specialists able to maintain organized tag sets. We propose turning this knowledge outwards, to enable a greater level of reliable connections and searches amongst user-tagged objects without diminishing the value of user-generated tags.

If people can easily mix well-defined tags with their own idiosyncratic ones, it will provide both individual value and the ability for the BBC and others to make meaningful connections between tagged resources.

The BBC said of our idea:

Many of the projects we recieved for the Innovation Labs looked at tagging, but the few that we picked for the Labs added a partiular feature or idea that made them stand out. In the case of BBC keywords, the idea was mixing the BBC's existing formal metadata with user tags, creating a richer resource of metadata to help users find and share content. [end of entry]

OED Online web site redesign[bookmarkable project description]

Industry: Publishing & Printing   Started: Apr 2005   Completed: Aug 2005

[off-site] OED Online Word of the day

[OED Online Redesign - Click to read this entry in full on a page on its own]

Following the success of our 2003 redesign of the public pages at the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) web site, Oxford University Press hired us to apply the design to OED Online.

We were briefed to make only the minimum of mark-up changes to apply the new design, effectively making this a reskinning project for the dictionary. This created an interesting challenge as it meant that we could not add or remove frames, move elements within frames or change the names, positions or sizes of the graphics, except in certain limited cases to improve usability.

We used the same graphic designer we worked with on the public pages redesign. Many of the elements in OED Online did not exist in the public site so we designed them from scratch with the graphic designer. The new design was implemented by HighWire Press using our new graphics, new style sheets, templates and documentation.  more...

[Click to read this entry in full on a page on its own]

CRASH, the construction and property industry charity for the homeless, asked for our help to design and redevelop their existing web site when it became too difficult to maintain.

We built the new site, making it interactive and dynamic, and easy for CRASH to maintain. Major site-wide changes can be made by editing a single file, and CRASH can update and add content with the minimum of mark-up.

Limitless Innovations are proud to have been able to donate 90% of our time to the development of the CRASH web site.  more...

The Windsor Half Marathon web site is at [off-site] www.runwindsor.com.

We were wholly responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the web site for the Windsor Half Marathon (WHM - formerly the Building Industry Windsor Half Marathon) for five years from 1996. Our time was provided pro bono.

The half marathon is an annual event in Windsor Great Park with around 5,000 runners. The event has building industry links and raises money for charity (over £1,000,000 since 1982).

In recent years the web site accounted for the majority of entries to the event. We led the requirements definition phase for a relaunch of the site in 2001.  more...

[Click to read this entry in full on a page on its own]

We provided a research report on UK ISPs to a public telecommunications company; they required a list of recommended Internet Access Providers to consider for investment in the UK. They contacted us via Paola Kathuria's UK & Irish Internet Company Directory.

Starting with a list of about 400 UK Internet access providers, we eliminated those companies which did not meet our client's core criteria. For the remaining 20 companies, we collected information from various sources and ran a telephone survey to gather in-depth information.

The resulting 80-page report and analysis contained a short-list of eleven candidate companies and we were subsquently commissioned to prepare two in-depth reports of UK companies.  more...

We provided research for a public telecommunications company considering investing in Internet access providers in the UK and central Europe. They'd contacted us after seeing InetUK, the UK & Irish Internet Company Directory, which Paola Kathuria maintained.

We contacted potential respondents by e-mail and invited them to participate in a web-based survey which we designed. Response rate was 56% - the survey responses and analysis were written up in a 145-page report which was later made public in summary form.  more...

In March 1997, Oxford University Press (OUP) asked us to construct a "publisher's dummy", a web site to prototype possible features and functionality of an online version of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
