Industry: Banks     For: Limitless
Started: Jan 1995   Completed: Dec 1996

In 1995, Limitless got together with a marketing company and their design arm, Denison Design, to design and build BarclayNet - a Barclays Bank web site for personal and business customers.

The site had features that we continue to adopt:

  • shape- and colour-coding of the main site sections,
  • goal-driven grouping of content and
  • a generated site separating style from content.

A generated site allowed Barclays maximum flexibility, as they were to maintain the 200-page web site.  more...

BBC 2006 Innovation Lab[bookmarkable project summary]

Industry: Broadcasting     Started:  2006   Completed:  2006

[off-site] open.bbc.co.uk/labs/2006

[2006 BBC Innvovation Lab - Click to read this entry in full on a page on its own]

We were one of ten companies short-listed from hundreds to attend the week-long BBC Innovation Lab for new media ideas.

With the help of mentors and experts, we worked on our idea throughout the week. We pitched at the end of the week of BBC Commissioners. Our idea was one of the few chosen to take forward.

This is from our original labs entry form.

BBC Keywords:

Create and distribute the tools necessary to let anyone add BBC-maintained tags to their online services, as a complement to existing user-generated tags. The BBC has internal taxonomies, and library information specialists able to maintain organized tag sets. We propose turning this knowledge outwards, to enable a greater level of reliable connections and searches amongst user-tagged objects without diminishing the value of user-generated tags.

If people can easily mix well-defined tags with their own idiosyncratic ones, it will provide both individual value and the ability for the BBC and others to make meaningful connections between tagged resources.

The BBC said of our idea:

Many of the projects we recieved for the Innovation Labs looked at tagging, but the few that we picked for the Labs added a partiular feature or idea that made them stand out. In the case of BBC keywords, the idea was mixing the BBC's existing formal metadata with user tags, creating a richer resource of metadata to help users find and share content. [end of entry]

OED Online web site redesign[bookmarkable project description]

Industry: Publishing & Printing     Started: Apr 2005   Completed: Aug 2005

[off-site] OED Online Word of the day

[OED Online Redesign - Click to read this entry in full on a page on its own]

Following the success of our 2003 redesign of the public pages at the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) web site, Oxford University Press hired us to apply the design to OED Online.

We were briefed to make only the minimum of mark-up changes to apply the new design, effectively making this a reskinning project for the dictionary. This created an interesting challenge as it meant that we could not add or remove frames, move elements within frames or change the names, positions or sizes of the graphics, except in certain limited cases to improve usability.

We used the same graphic designer we worked with on the public pages redesign. Many of the elements in OED Online did not exist in the public site so we designed them from scratch with the graphic designer. The new design was implemented by HighWire Press using our new graphics, new style sheets, templates and documentation.  more...
